Five Key Specs for Choosing Cymbals
-
Check the piece count
You must verify the number of cymbals included in the package. The Arborea Butcher set offers a complete five-piece layout, which provides a full range of sounds for performance. Other options may have fewer pieces, requiring you to purchase additional items separately. Ensure the count matches your drum kit requirements so you have enough variety for different musical styles without needing extra hardware or pads.
-
Identify the metal type
The material significantly changes the sound profile and weight. The Arborea set uses B20 bronze for warmth, while the Sabian SBR uses brass for a lighter, brighter tone. Bronze generally offers more complex harmonics, whereas brass is often more affordable and durable. You should select the metal that aligns with your desired tonal character and playing style for the best acoustic result.
-
Compare the total weight
Weight affects portability and the feel of your playing. The Sabian SBR brass set weighs only 6.61 pounds, making it the lightest option for easy transport. In contrast, the Sabian B8X set weighs 16.9 pounds, offering a heavier, more substantial feel. You should choose a weight that suits your gigging needs, ensuring your setup is manageable for travel or stationary performance.
-
Review the configuration
Look at the specific sizes included in the set. The Arborea Butcher set includes a 20-inch Ride, 16-inch Crash, and 14-inch Hi-Hats, providing a balanced setup. Other sets may vary in size distribution, affecting how you mix and match sounds. Ensure the configuration includes the essential cymbals you need for your repertoire, such as a ride for timekeeping and crashes for accents.
-
Assess the finish style
The finish impacts both the look and the sound characteristics. The Sabian XSR features a natural finish, which often preserves the raw metal tone. The Sabian B8X is bronze, while the SBR is brass. You should consider how the finish complements your kit aesthetic and whether it suits your performance environment. Different finishes can also affect the brightness and sustain of the cymbals during play.
