How Each Alternative Compares
Donner EDS-220 14-Inch 5-Piece Junior Drum Kit
The Donner EDS-220 targets young beginners aged 3 to 10 with a compact 14-inch pad size. It weighs just 22 pounds, making it far lighter and smaller than the VAD316, which measures 55.1 inches wide and 47.2 inches high. This junior kit sacrifices the deep sound editing and wireless connectivity of the Roland module for a simpler, scaled-down acoustic setup. It includes essential shells and cymbals but lacks digital features. Choose this if you need a space-saving kit for a child rather than a full-size electronic drumming station for adults.
VEVOR 5-Piece 22-Inch Full Size Adult Drum Set
The VEVOR SH-003-SY is a traditional acoustic kit in silver, built with poplar shells and carbon steel hardware. It weighs 66.1 pounds and measures 22.8 inches in width, differing significantly from the VAD316’s electronic nature and larger footprint. This set includes sticks and offers a physical playing experience without a sound module or wireless adapter. It serves adult beginners wanting a complete physical kit. The Ktaxon KT-424 provides a full-size acoustic setup in black with poplar shells and double-braced hardware. It measures 23 inches wide and 22 inches high, offering a more compact footprint than the VAD316’s 55.1-inch width. This kit delivers physical drum shells rather than digital e-kit features. It lacks the V31 module, wireless connectivity, and sound editing tools found in the Roland. It is designed for traditional drumming practice. Choose this alternative if you want a robust acoustic kit for adults and do not need electronic sound expansion or computer-based playing capabilities.
Donner DDS-520 5-Piece 22-Inch Acoustic Drum Kit
The Donner DDS-520 features full-size acoustic shells with volume-dampening mute pads for quiet practice. It weighs 99 pounds and measures 47.2 inches high, differing from the VAD316’s electronic module and wireless adapter. This set provides an authentic acoustic layout rather than a digital e-drum setup. It includes hardware and practice cymbals but lacks the V31 sound engine and Roland Cloud integration. It is ideal for adults seeking a quiet acoustic experience. Select this if you prefer physical drumming with noise reduction over the deep sound editing and wireless expansion capabilities of the Roland VAD316.

What is the weight of a full-size kit?
Full-size kits vary significantly in weight. The VEVOR set weighs 66.1 pounds, while the Ashthorpe model is heavier at 91 pounds. The Donner DDS-520 is the heaviest at 99 pounds. In comparison, the compact Donner EDS-220 is far lighter at 22 pounds.
Can I get a red or silver drum set?
Yes, color options are available in the acoustic category. The VEVOR SH-003-SY comes in silver, while the Ashthorpe S-AB-5533-RED is finished in red. The Ktaxon and Best Choice Products kits are available in black and natural woodgrain respectively.
How do the dimensions compare to the VAD316?
The Roland VAD316 is large, measuring 55.1 inches wide and 47.2 inches high. Most acoustic alternatives are smaller in footprint. For example, the Ktaxon kit is 23 inches wide and 22 inches high. The Ashthorpe model is 29 inches wide and 20 inches high.
